ENGLISH CORNER - JULY 2010

The native English speakers at inlingua Chemnitz hail from all corners of the globe. Robyn (CAN), Sandy (USA), Helen (GB) and Rafael (South Africa) bring a variety of backgrounds, interests, and experiences to the classroom and, in addition to the curriculum, ensure our students have enjoyable, informative and interesting lessons.

Improve your personality ...

We all know that learning a language can be difficult. First of all there are the practical difficulties relating to the language. There is a new grammar system to learn, new vocabulary and strange pronunciation to get your tongue around. On top of that, some things just aren't said in the way that you're used to! All of these things, however, can be overcome with hard work, interesting lessons and lots of motivation.

So why does language learning sometimes remain a frustrating experience even when you have dealt with the practical difficulties. The impact of the abstract issues involved in learning a language are often neglected. One of these issues is identity. Language is one way that adults express their personalities, so when you can no longer manipulate the language that you are speaking, you begin to lose your identity. For example, if you are the person in your circle of friends who always makes jokes, then it will be more difficult to maintain this role in a foreign language.

This can be quite traumatic at first, but it can be also a wonderful opportunity. Maybe there are some parts of your mother tongue identity that you don't like and you can choose to erase them from your foreign language identity. For example, I think I swear to much when I speak to friends in English, so I have purposefully avoided learning German swear words. Now the parents of my German friends are under the illusion that I am the most polite person that ever walked the earth! Thus, I have effectively improved my personality by learning a language and anyone can do this. Maybe you overuse a word in your mother tongue or you would like to be a more positive person. Simply choose your goal and make a conscious effort to learn the tools of the foreign language that you will need to achieve your goal. In this way, you not only combat the problem of losing your identity but you can also gain something on top of your new language. An improved personality!
